When we switch to password protection on the Department News Blog, it may not be possible to aggregate the news on the Portal Page. It was suggested that many of you would like a refresher on how to make a shortcut to the News Blog on your DesktopDrag FavIcon, Make a Desktop Shortcut (Windows or Mac).

Read this complete paragraph and then follow this link for a demonstration (or click the picture). Follow the cursor icon around the screen. When the cursor reaches the FavIcon in the address bar, I click, hold and drag the icon to the desktop, and then release the mouse button (this is the standard drag-and-drop procedure for all applications that support drag-and-drop).

This should work with any web site. On a Mac, the desktop shortcut will have a strange file extension that you may not be used to. But try it! It should work.

Please note that the new shortcut link will inherit the icon of the default browser on your system. If you dragged a FavIcon from Firefox, and Internet Explorer is your default browser, then the icon displayed will be the Internet Explorer icon and the page will launch in Internet Explorer …… or you can drag this icon to an open Firefox box on your screen.

For you information, I have placed helpful links and resources that have been made available to me by Susan Brynteson, Leila Lyons, and Lonnie Hearn over the years.

Many at the University, still urge us to refer to the following web site as a tool to judge Educational Fair Use:

Your other copyright and Fair Use resources are:

The four factors that must be weighed to measure Fair Use are:

  • the purpose and character of your us
  • the nature of the copyrighted work
  • the amount and substantiality of the portion taken
    • 10% or less?
  • the effect of the use upon the potential market

One of the big differences relative to “music” copyright is often the number of protections that is afforded a piece of music, which are:

  • reproduce in print
    • usually assigned to the publisher
  • right to control derivative works
    • Marching Band has to deal with this for all their shows
  • right to distribute copies to public
    • the publisher is usually assigned this right
  • right to public performance
    • UD pays a lot of money each year to allow us to perform via ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC licenses
  • right to recording
    • MECHANICAL LICENSE obtained for all audio media productions
  • right to perform publicly sound recording / broadcast (ELECTRICAL TRANSCRIPTION)
    • UD Radio Station negotiates and pays this every year
  • right to control use with motion picture / television (SYNCHRONIZATION LICENSE)
    • currently negotiating this for the Chorale video
  • right to control use in performance of compositions (VIDEOGRAM LICENSES)
    • sort of like the above … the differences between the two are subtle
  • right to control use in commericial (COMMERCIAL SYNCHRONIZATION)
  • right to control use in Music Products (singing dolls, music boxes, etc ) MUSICAL PRODUCT LICENSE
  • right to control use in multi-media license
    • UD UMS negotiates these all the time
  • right to cyberspace control
    • UD pays for our web performances
  • right to Dramatic Performance License and Grand Performance Licenses
    • we have to negotiate for each opera/musical … are not allowed to perform drama music without a separate license and fee
  • right to Dramatic Adaptation Licenses
    • like Billy Joel’s “Movin’ Out” …. that required this license

Click on the link below to see information about this year’s Graduate Student class in the Department of Music. As I had stated in the last faculty meeting, I think we have the largest full-time graduate population we’ve ever had, and students coming from a greater variety of backgrounds than ever before. I’m always available to answer questions or field comments about the grad program, and for those haven’t yet, I encourage you to get me grad student requests for the next school year, so we can determine what assistantship lines to advertise.

You can also visit the Grad Student blog to see what sort of information I’m getting out to the students en masse: http://udmusicgrads.edublogs.org/

Cheers,
Larry

Last year, we told you that our Portal Page was not compliant with the ADA, with respect to accessibility issues.  As a temporary fix, we quickly published a newer version of the portal with redundant links mirroring the pull-down menu structure.  It took a little longer to rebuild and test this compliant pull-down menu version (and we had to wait for Microsoft to release a more compliant browser, IE7), but finally, here is the new page.  We have added most of the links and features that everyone asked for.
Test your web page for compliance at the Center for Applied Special Technology site.

In addition, in the bottom portion of the page, we will track the RSS feeds from the Department News Blog and the Department Technology Blog.  This web-based RSS feed aggregator will show the last four posts with a little bit of teaser text.  The feed aggregator updates every 20 minutes or so, plus you will have to refresh your browser.
Enjoy!      Bud Clark

This is one area where we hope to gain a lot of space in our email INBOXes. I am now going to “brag” about my daughter …. merely as an example …. mind you.

Take a look at this year’s crop of University Writing Fellows. Wrting Fellows Thumb, 07aUp in the front row is my daughter, Victoria Clark (Tori). She is assigned to the freshman English class ….”Metaphors Be With You” (….think about it, you’ll get it … and chuckle). It’s a poetry class. [Note: You will see a couple of other music folks in the picture … !]

Here is where we all gain some real-estate in our INBOXes. Normally, I would send an email to the department list. Then 15-20 congratulatory replies would ensue.

How does this blog change things? Look below and click on the “Comments & Trackbacks” text. This will take you to a page that allows you to leave a comment. Try it. It’s fun!

Voila! I flexed my “boasting-rights” muscle, several would have provided their congratulatory replies ….. and all of us benefit from some elbow room in our INBOXes …. while still managing to get the word out.

Bud Clark is unveiling “Music Technology News” very soon. Visit the site for a preview.

With this site, Bud is hoping that:

  • this will limit the number of emails he has to send to everyone to explain issues
  • and will allow for comments to each posting, for improving the posts.

The site is designed to:

  • allow information will be stored and searchable for future use
  • and providing an RSS feed for those that want to stay on top of the issues.

Bud will collect past email posts that are still important for this site.
